Education
school programs

The Museum at Bethel Woods offers engaging, curriculum-based education programs that use the museum exhibits and artifacts to enliven the study of social studies, music and other subjects.

The museum is an educational resource for students of all ages. Our education staff develops curriculum ties and cultivates relationships with regional schools, school districts, and teachers to develop programs and opportunities that engage and educate students.  All school programs include a tour of the galleries and hands-on activities led by the education staff. In advance of a museum visit, teachers also receive materials to help them integrate the museum visit into their classrooms.

Programs for Middle and High School Students

Revolution Evolution: How is History Made?
In this social studies-based program, students look critically at the way history is told by identifying three elements (politics, economics, and the arts) that contributed to the development of "The Sixties."

Teach Your Children
This program on civic engagement asks students to examine the injustices of the 1960s and the ways in which young people of the time sought to address these issues. Ultimately, students identify problems facing themselves today and ways they can become agents of change.

We're All Playing in the Same Band
This music-based program examines the socio-political aspects of the music and art by looking at Woodstock through the lens of American protest writings. Students will explore the issues that protest writings and music have addressed through the span of American history.

Please call Margaret Hughes, Museum Education Manager, at 845.583.2097 for additional information or to book a program.

Teacher Advisory Committee
Interested in a program you don't see offered? Have ideas for teacher workshops or school programs? Want to become more involved in schools programs at The Museum at Bethel Woods? Consider serving on the museum's Teacher Advisory Committee (TAC). The TAC is a representative group of teachers who meet quarterly to review school programs and to help craft new programs. This is a great opportunity for creative teachers interested in making the museum a solid resource for their students and schools.

Professional Development
The Museum at Bethel Woods is dedicated to meeting the needs of teachers and administrators as well as students. We periodically offer teacher workshops to explore using the museum in the classroom. Additionally, The Museum at Bethel Woods has been proud to host teachers involved in Teaching American History grants and other programs. Check back frequently for information on professional development opportunities.
